Breathedge 2 Titanium
Titanium comes from two places: spiky debris chunks floating in open space, which you break apart with the Scrap tool, and asteroid veins, which need drilling gear. If you do not have a drill yet, you are looking for the spiky rocks.
The other thing worth knowing up front: titanium is not a starting-area resource. If you are combing the Outskirts for it early on and finding nothing, that is normal, not bad luck.
Before you have drilling gear
Look for large debris pieces covered in distinctive spikes. Players describe them as a spiky rock or a "titanium ball", and the description holds up — it is the only thing out there with that silhouette, so once you have seen one you will not miss the next.
Hit them with the Scrap tool to break them apart and collect the ore.
In practice, the first ones tend to show up around the Central Depot stage, when the story has you repairing the shuttle. Head out of the front of the facility and sweep the surrounding area — you will find several in a row there.
After you have drilling gear
The Thumper extracts metals directly from asteroid veins, titanium included. You have its blueprint from the start, and it costs:
| Thumper | Amount |
|---|---|
| Metal | 4 |
| Plastic | 2 |
Once you can drill, the asteroid belt becomes the reliable supply and the spiky debris becomes a bonus you pick up in passing.
What titanium is for
Most people search for titanium because a recipe has stopped them. These are the ones that ask for it:
| Item | Recipe | Unlocked by |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack (+75 carry weight) | Aluminium ×4, Plastic ×2, Titanium ×4, Duct Tape ×4 | Placing the Painted Corpse by the lockbox |
| Oxygen Tank (+300 max oxygen) | Bellyplastic ×2, Titanium ×4, Refined Metal ×4, Aluminium ×4 | Completing the abandoned station quest |
| Spraytron | Titanium ×4, Refined Metal ×4, Battery ×2, Glass ×2 | Repairing the old station's control panel and turning it into a base |
| Shuttle hull breach repair | Metal ×4, Titanium ×4, Duct Tape ×1, Rubber ×4 | Main story |
The Backpack recipe is confirmed by both VGTimes and Destructoid. The Oxygen Tank and Spraytron recipes come from a single guide, so check the in-game crafting screen before you commit a stack of titanium to one of them.
Both upgrades are worth the trip: +75 carry weight and +300 oxygen change how far you can range in one outing, which matters more in this game than in the first one because the starting region is much larger.
Related materials you will need alongside it
Titanium recipes rarely ask for titanium alone. From the same guides:
- Metal — large orange metal debris, easy to spot at distance; barrels and canisters also break down with Scrap. Four Metal makes one Refined Metal.
- Plastic — hardened plastic grows as dark lumps at cable ends; a few hits with Scrap
- Wires — pull them out of electrical panels with the Probe; the starting area is full of them
- Aluminium — from asteroid mining, same as titanium
- Rubber and the lightbulb have their own pages
Tool costs, for planning: Scrap (Metal ×2), Thumper (Metal ×4, Plastic ×2), Cutter (Aluminium ×4, Plastic ×2, Metal ×4), Twister (Aluminium ×4, Wires ×2, Duct Tape ×3, Plastic ×2, unlocked after the three antennas).
Two things not to believe
- "Titanium is behind Chuck's Taxi." That comes from the demo, and the developers rebuilt the demo build from scratch before Early Access. Demo-era locations are not reliable — see the demo walkthrough page for why.
- Breathedge 1 titanium guides. The first game had different mechanics and different recipes. Anything describing a Repair Tool recipe or cutting rubber with shears is about the wrong game.
Version note
Recipes above are from the Early Access 0.8 build. Early Access adds and rebalances recipes regularly, so treat the numbers as current-at-time-of-writing and trust the crafting screen over any wiki, including this one. The in-game Encyclopedia is the developers' own reference and is worth checking first for anything unclear.
How to be sure you have found it
Two identifying details, from the guides and from recorded play:
- The silhouette. A large debris chunk bristling with spikes — players call it a spiky rock or a titanium ball. Nothing else in open space looks like it.
- The timing. If you have not left the starting region yet, you almost certainly have not seen one. Players routinely note that they need titanium for the Backpack long before they find any.
If you are sweeping the Outskirts for it early, you are not missing a trick — the material simply is not there in quantity.
Titanium as loot
Not all of it has to be mined. During the Chuck's Taxi side content, the compartment you open with the drunk robots' part contains resources including titanium. That is a fixed haul rather than a respawning source, but it arrives early relative to when you can drill, which makes it worth doing on the way through.
Materials you will need in the same breath
Titanium recipes are never titanium alone:
- Refined Metal — not gathered directly. Four Metal makes one Refined Metal, and Metal is the orange debris you break with Scrap. Both the Spraytron and the Oxygen Tank want four Refined Metal, meaning sixteen Metal each.
- Aluminium — asteroid material like titanium, extracted with the Thumper.
- Glass — floats as small balls in open space, no tool needed; there is a cluster in the pipe corridor directly north of the train.
- Battery — an early one floats near a destroyed luggage compartment: leave the train, fly right, turn right again and look down.
When in doubt, check the Encyclopedia
The in-game Encyclopedia is the developers' own reference, and they point players to it for exactly this kind of question. During Early Access it will be more current than any wiki, including this one — if a recipe here disagrees with the crafting screen, the game is right.
